Join us for a special weekend celebrating Argentine Folkloric Dance & Music, Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23! The event features dancer & performer Nicholas Wallach, guitarist Alejo de los Reyes, and pianist Emiliano Messiez, and coincides with International Folklore Day on Saturday, August 22
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
FRIDAY, AUGUST 21 — POTLUCK DINNER & TALK
7–8 pm: Potluck Dinner
8–9 pm: “Argentinian Culture beyond Buenos Aires: Cosquín and Cultural Diversity” — a talk by Nicholas Wallach
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
SATURDAY, AUGUST 22 — WORKSHOPS, CONCERT & LIVE-MUSIC MILONGA QILOMBO
2–3:15 pm: Chacarera Unstructured — Freedom in Movement
The chacarera invites us to be free, so why learn it as a series of rigid structures? Centering personal and collective expression, we’ll find new paths to enjoy and understand chacarera more deeply, and leave with everything needed to dance it socially.
3:30–4:45 pm: Argentinian Folkloric Technique — Zapateo, Zarandeo & Foundations
Inspired by the works of Ballet Sumampa, winners of Pre Cosquín 2026. Enrich your chacarera with new zapateos and zarandeos and move more confidently as a dancer. Includes a short group sequence based on Ballet Sumampa’s winning works from this year’s Pre Cosquín, Argentina’s most important folklore competition.
8–9 pm: Concert of Argentine Folkloric Music & Tango — guitarist Alejo de los Reyes & pianist Emiliano Messiez
9:30 pm–2 am: LIVE MUSIC Milonga Qilombo — featuring Alejo de los Reyes & Emiliano Messiez, with a SHOW by Nicholas Wallach and DJ Karen Johnson

Alejo de los Reyes — Guitarist
Alejo de los Reyes is an acclaimed Argentine guitarist specializing in tango, Argentine folklore, and classical guitar. Born in Chivilcoy, Argentina, he comes from a distinguished family of musicians and has performed extensively across Argentina, the U.S., and Europe.
His expressive style combines the elegance of classical guitar with the passion and rhythm of Argentine tango, making him a captivating performer and a wonderful addition to any tango celebration.
His discography includes Tierra Querida and Sobretarde, dedicated to the music of Argentine guitarist and composer Abel Fleury, as well as Al compás de la vihuela, which explores the connection between Argentine music and Renaissance repertoire. He has also led the Quinteto de los Reyes, performing traditional tango and Argentine folklore with a distinctive guitar-centered sound.

Event Details
Philly Tango Lab is a small group of volunteers that aims to create events in which tango dancers, musicians and general audience can experience the full extent of tango culture, as it is still alive in Buenos Aires, not only on Milongas (tango dances), but in small cafes in which singers connect with a devout audience, in the long rehearsals of the “Orquestas Típicas” (the tango Big Bands), in the connection between the musicians, dancers and audience, and, most of all, like it’s enjoyed among friends in a party.
Tango panorama might have changed in the last decades, but there’s still people who couldn’t concieve a good party without a guitar player and some singers. And if there’s empanadas or asado (and the ocassional wine), even better!
And we are backed by the Notsolatin organization, already a staple of South Philly, in which most of the community of musicians gather in a dozen of events every month to enjoy great home-made food, friendship, music and endeless jams.
