This is an invitation to attend my graduation concert at the UNA (National University of the Arts), in Buenos Aires, where I studied between 2004 and 2011.
I’ll be doing a dissertation and concert about the “Lessons for guitar” of Julio S. Sagreras. The six books of lessons, progressively arranged , are a monumental work of pedagogy, written on Buenos Aires on the early 20th century.
I’ll also be playing most of the sixt book of lessons and the most difficult one; a collection of virtuoso pieces that at the same time synthesize the technical tradition of the 19th century and open up a new language, born out of the author’s experimentation and expertise on the guitar. And I’ll also include on the program music of guitarist highly esteemed by Sagreras, like his father, Gaspar Sagreras (a pioneer of the guitar in Buenos Aires in the 19th century) or María Luisa Anido (to whom she dedicates the last of his “lessons”), the main figure of the guitar in Argentina troughout the 20th century.
The birth of the books, the rich guitar ambience of Buenos Aires (guitar was an instrument both played by the popular musicians and by the aristocracy of the time, including several major political figures), the influence of the “Tárrega school” on Sagreras, are topics that will be part of my dissertation and, specially, of the paper I prepared specially as part of the requirements for the graduation. You can expect I’ll be sharing the article with my subscribers some time next year.
If you are in Buenos Aires and you want to attend, the concert is public and free (subject to the room capacity).
